Tangram
Place the seven pieces to cover the silhouette exactly. Every silhouette has at least one solution.
One challenge a day, the same for everyone
The day's silhouette is generated from the date: the same for everyone. It always has a solution. Cover it to complete the challenge.
- The same silhouette for everyone, until midnight.
- The silhouette always has a solution: covering it completes the challenge.
- The shared result is your time, never the arrangement of the pieces.
- Completing a challenge, any of the four, extends your streak by one day.
The Free play / Daily challenge toggle sits at the very top of the board. The challenge never touches your free-play best scores, and free play stays unlimited.
Five steps to your first game
- Look at the silhouette. The area to cover is drawn as a recessed outline. You need to fill it with the seven pieces.
- Choose a piece. Tap it in the tray: it becomes active.
- Orient it. “Rotate” turns it a quarter turn; “Flip” mirrors it.
- Place it. Tap an empty area of the silhouette: the piece goes there if it fits.
- Cover everything. Place all seven pieces with no gaps or overflow. “Remove” fixes a mistake.
What you need to understand
One input for every way to play
Mouse and trackpad
Click a piece in the tray, orient it with “Rotate” and “Flip,” then click the silhouette to place it. Click a placed piece to remove it.
Touch screen
The piece tray and the silhouette stay large enough for a thumb.
Keyboard
The pieces and the Rotate / Flip / Remove buttons are real buttons you can reach with the keyboard.
Five things you only learn by playing
- Place the two large triangles first: they are what gives the silhouette its structure.
- The square and the parallelogram often slip into corners or notches.
- The parallelogram is the only piece worth flipping: if an area resists, try its mirror image.
- Every silhouette was assembled from the seven pieces: a solution always exists.
- “Remove last” undoes your last move without starting over.
Tangram, in detail
By covering the silhouette exactly with the seven pieces, with no gaps, no overflow and no overlap. The game checks it automatically.
Yes. Every silhouette is generated by assembling the seven pieces at random, then keeping only the outline: the arrangement that produced it is a solution.
Select it, then “Rotate” turns it a quarter turn and “Flip” mirrors it. The parallelogram is the only piece whose mirror image changes its shape.
Tap an empty area of the silhouette: the active piece goes there if it fits in its current orientation. Otherwise, rotate it or aim somewhere else.
Tap a piece that is already placed to remove it, or use “Remove last.”
It is your best solving time, remembered if you accepted the “preferences” category.
The day's silhouette is generated from the date: the same for everyone, and always solvable. The shared result is your time, never the arrangement of the pieces.
No: the tangram is a traditional Chinese puzzle that has been in the public domain for centuries. Our silhouettes are generated by our own code.
