Accessibility

We aim for WCAG 2.2 Level AA, which meets and exceeds the WCAG 2.1 AA benchmark used under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Section 508. This page doesn't just announce that: it lists the keys for each game, one by one, and says what isn't right yet.

What applies to the whole site

  • A “Skip to main content” link appears on the first Tab press.
  • Every interactive element has a hover state and a visible focus outline, in blue, that doesn't depend on the browser's default settings.
  • Text contrast on the deep background meets the AA threshold; light text on the night background exceeds 15:1.
  • If your system asks for reduced animations (prefers-reduced-motion), the slow background drift stops, tile pop-ins and the victory glow are neutralized, and every transition drops to zero.
  • No information is carried by color alone: 2048 tiles show their number, Pairs cards a symbol, the snake's head a distinct shape, Tangram pieces crisp outlines.
  • Each game has an aria-live status region that announces the move played and the current situation, not just the final result.

2048

  • The grid is exposed as an application (role="application"); Tab brings focus to it.
  • , or W A S D, or Z Q S D move the tiles; a directional pad made of real buttons is also available.
  • The highest tile reached and the end of the game are announced.

Snake

  • Tab brings focus to the play area; the arrow keys, W A S D or Z Q S D change direction, as does the directional pad.
  • The apple count is shown as a number and the end of the game is announced.
  • The game plays in real time: that's its accessibility limit, noted below.

Pairs

  • Each card is a real button; Tab to move around, Enter or Space to flip it.
  • Each card announces its symbol (triangle, circle, star...): the game can be played without distinguishing colors.
  • The move count and the win are announced.

Tangram

  • The seven pieces and the Rotate / Flip / Remove buttons are real buttons reachable by keyboard.
  • Placing is done by selecting a piece and then tapping the silhouette; each action is announced in the status region.
  • The silhouette is described as an image to be covered.

Daily challenge

  • The Free play / Daily challenge toggle is a group of two ordinary buttons, reachable with Tab. Each announces its state with aria-pressed.
  • The challenge panel spells out the date, today's status and the current streak.
  • The Copy my result button copies text that never contains your game, only your result; an aria-live region confirms the copy.
  • On the home page, each daily challenge game carries a label saying whether it has been completed and with what result.

Known limits

Snake plays in real time: it keeps moving without stopping. That is incompatible with screen-reader navigation, which needs time to read each cell. We say so rather than pretend otherwise; the other three games are played at your own pace, with no imposed clock.

Tangram pieces are placed with the mouse or by touch, aiming at the silhouette; it doesn't yet offer fully keyboard-based, cell-by-cell placement. Piece selection and the controls, however, are keyboard-accessible.
